Knit Happens 2 is a group of Albemarle Plantation volunteers who have been donating their time knitting and crocheting hats for chemo patients for the past two years. The club has just passed the 500-hat milestone!!
I first heard about the Knit Happens group while visiting an old friend in New Bern, NC. My friend was part of the original group that meets each week at a local coffeehouse. Their group contributes to organizations, including the New Bern Children’s Hospital and additional local chemo centers. Many chemo patients lose their hair during treatment, so hospitals and treatment centers welcome donations of hats that they can provide to patients free-of-charge.
I thought this was such a great cause that I brought the idea to Albemarle Plantation. With a few volunteers from the Plantation, we started a new group called Knit Happens 2. We include a card with each hat containing the message, “To Bring Softness & Comfort”.
When we bring the hats to the chemo center each month, we are warmly greeted with much appreciation. Sometimes we are surprised with donated yarn for us to continue making our hats. Our group has been knitting and crocheting for the past two years and we have had a few new people who have joined us. I am so proud of the people in our group who donate their time and talents for this worthy cause. We are now working on our next 500 hats!
